Metadata Framework to Benefit Online Learning

Early in June, The Association of Educational Publishers and Creative Commons announced the launch of a new initiative designed to "improve search results on the World Wide Web through the creation of a metadata framework specifically for learning resources." The announcement was made at the Content in Context Conference held in Washington DC. HippoCampus Wins an AFFY!

The Alliance for Distance Education in California has honored HippoCampus.org with the fifth annual AFFY award! The "AFFY", short for Affinity Groups, is given out each year to the distance learning project that best exemplifies a set of objective outcomes, effective use of technology, student-teacher accommodations, and creative partnerships. We would like to thank the community of active users that has helped guide this project and continue to make it such a success!
New Resource Available to Southern State Educators

The Kentucky Learning Depot is now open to P-20 educators across Kentucky looking for a one-stop, low-cost, high-tech solution to their digital content needs. Their collection of content includes the robust multimedia learning objects from the National Repository of Online Courses (NROC).
Feasibility Study for Creating an Online Catalogue for University Presses

MITE Receives $5 Million Grant for Developmental Math Project

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation recently awarded the Monterey Institute for Technology and Education a $5 million grant to fund a new developmental math project. The program will combine the four courses required in most remedial math sequences. Using pre-assessments and multiple learning approaches, MITE hopes to create coursework that can be customized to each individual student's needs.
AMATYC and MITE Team Up To Tackle Developmental Math

The Monterey Institute for Technology and Education (MITE) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation recently brought together subject-matter experts from AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges) and representatives from the Gates Foundation to develop a new vision for a developmental mathematics curriculum. The framework that came out of the Seattle workshop is a "new vision" for mathematics courses.
Improving Education via Open Educational Resources (OER) and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA)

Some states have already started using the federal stimulus funding to get involved in the OER movement through a membership in the National Repository of Online Courses (NROC). According to Barbara Chow, Education Program Director for The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. "It works, it is cost effective, it improves instruction and it can have a profound impact on improving student outcomes."

MIT Press, in cooperation with The Monterey Institute for Technology and Education (MITE), is pleased to announce the publication of the first issue of The International Journal of Learning and Media (IJLM). A first of its kind, the journal is devoted to examining the intersection of media and learning in multiple contexts. The development and publication of IJLM is supported by a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation as part of its 5-year, $50 million, initiative in digital media and learning.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Developmental Math Project

The Monterey Institute for Technology and Education has been chosen by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to design new developmental math content which will help students overcome current obstacles to success. MITE will be holding focus groups around the country with various groups from middle school, high school and community colleges as it designs this new material.
